Medford’s first-ever crew team held their first practice last Friday on the Malden River out of the Tufts Boathouse.

According to Athletic Director Bob Maloney, 23 kids have passed the swim test and more are expected to pass the test and join the team.

The crew team is practicing now and hopes to have a boys and girls’ team ready to compete in the spring.  Medford High School Science teacher Amy Byron is serving as coach.

The program is being organized with the help of Gentle Giant Rowing, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the sport.  Tufts University is also helping by lending the use of its new, state-of-the-art boathouse to the Medford and Malden teams.

Other new additions to the Mustang sports scene include a freshman girls’ soccer team and a junior varsity cheering squad.
