“Bucket Brigade” Helps Herring Cross Dam

herring_slide1.pngAnnual Event Helps Fish Reach Breeding Ground in Upper Mystic Lake

Volunteers descended upon the Mystic Lakes on Friday and Saturday to help herring get across the dam to reach the Upper Mystic Lake to lay their eggs during the 4th Annual Herring Bucket Brigade, sponsored by the Medford Boat Club. At left, a herring slides down an improvised “water slide” designed to help the fish get over the dam between the Lower Mystic Lake and the Upper Mystic Lake.

Matt Ayer from the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game was on hand to inform the public and keep tally of the herring that were helped to cross over the dam. The state fish and game department has issued a ban on taking herring from their waters.
