Girls Lax Falls in Game 1 of State Tourney

MustangsThe Medford girls lacrosse team’s post-season run ended Tuesday with a loss against Acton-Boxborough.

The team, seeded 14th out of the 16 teams vying for a state title, fell 17-7 against #3 seed Acton-Boxborough.

The Mustangs finished the season with a 9-9 record. It’s the second time in the ten year history of the team that the girls qualified for the state tournament.

Head Coach Matt Galusi knew his team faced some very tough competition for the first round and is happy with the team’s performance. He said he was proud of all of the work the girls put into the season just to qualify for the state tournament.

The team was led by senior captain Jill Winnett, one of the top scorers in the state with over 100 points scored in 16 games, and by Michelle Lima and Paige McGlynn on defense.

Meanwhile, the varsity baseball team begins its post-season play in Lowell on Thursday afternoon.

This is the first time the baseball team has qualified for the state tournament since Head Coach Nick Tucci was a star pitcher for the team in 2001.

The team is seeded 20th out of 24th teams with an 11-9 record, while Lowell, 12-8, is the #13 seed.

One thing Lowell and Medford have in common is they are one of only five teams this season to defeat top-ranked Malden Catholic, which is seeded 6th in the state tournament and is taking a bye in the preliminary round.

Medford also managed to knock off Boston English last week and is one of only two teams to beat the Bulldogs, who are seeded #2 with an 18-2 record.

Medford is one of several Greater Boston League teams to qualify for the state tournament. Malden is seeded 7th with a 15-5 record and drew a bye this round, while Waltham is #9 at 14-6, Cambridge is #17 at 10-8, and Arlington is #19 at 11-9.

The Mustangs are led offensively by senior captain Ben Waldrip and sophomore catcher Danny Gunn, and by sophomore Ian Fitzgerald and junior Richie LeBert on the mound.
