Rising Costs, Unexpected Expenses Make for Tough Budget Season

The city will tackle putting together a budget in the next couple of weeks before fiscal year 2009 begins on July 1. 

Rising energy and health insurance costs, combined with unexpected expenses such as a fire at the high school last summer, have left the city scrambling to cover a deficit for fiscal year 2008 and to put together a budget for 2009.

Budget hearings are scheduled before the City Council for Wednesday, June 18, and Thursday, June 19, at 6:15PM in Room 207 at City Hall. 

The School Committee budget hearing will take place at 6:30PM on Monday, June 23, at the Medford High School library.

All budget hearings are open to the public.
