To mark the fifth year of summer exhibition programming focused on the vitality in the arts in Somerville and Medford, Tufts’ host communities, we are pleased to present five site-specific installations by Kyle Larabee, Mindy Nierenberg, Roy Pardi, Randal Thurston, and August Ventimiglia. A special Open House for Medford residents is being held on Sunday, June 29, from 1PM-4PM at the gallery. Details about the event are below:

Open House Activities:

Voice Your Vision! Guided Tours of the Summer Exhibition “5×5”: 5 Artists; 5 Site-Specific Installations
1:30-2:00pm (adults)
2:15-2:45pm (children)
Tours are designed using the Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) technique. Rather than lecturing, a Gallery Guide will lead the group in conversation by asking open-ended questions that encourage close examination and consideration of the installations. This technique works equally well with children and adults, experienced art viewers and those who are less accustomed to arts settings. It is a collaborative process that builds group tolerance and effective communication skills, is about seeing not subject matter, and inspires creative and critical thinking.

Program with Medford artist Mindy Nierenberg related to her installation at the Gallery about the Medford Public Library
3:00pm
Mindy Nierenberg’s installation pays homage to the public library as the artist’s refuge and laments the demise of the library as a cultural and funding priority (a sample of Nierenberg’s work is above, at left).

Kids Table!Children can display their creative genius as they collaborate on a mural of cut paper silhouettes inspired by Randal Thurston’s installation at the Gallery. The children’s artwork will be displayed on the 40-foot wall of the Slater Concourse Gallery. Your kids will feel like they’ve really made it in the art world!

Meet the Tufts University Art Gallery Director Amy Ingrid Schlegel! If you’ve always wondered what it is like to run a contemporary art gallery, and how decisions are made about exhibitions and programs, now is the time to find out!

Food and drink! Fruit, vegetables, chips, pretzels, brownies, juice, water, and iced tea will be available all afternoon!
