The Medford High School golf team has qualified for the state tournament this season for just the second time in its forty year history.
The team is undefeated this season, with an 8-0 record heading into the Greater Boston League Championships Monday morning. After that, it’s just two more matches with Lowell and Stoneham this week before round one of the state tournament begins in late October.
Head Coach Ray Dyer is proud of his team, one of the first to qualify for post-season action. The Mustangs have not qualified as a team for the state tourney for about a decade. Last year, junior Steve Aghiarian, who is undefeated so far this season, qualified as an individual.
Aghiarian was the first Mustang golfer to qualify for states as an individual since 1975, when his coach qualified as a senior.
The Mustangs are led by Aghiarian and fellow captains Eric McNeil and Jake Leary, Kylie Callahan (the sole Lady Mustang), Jack Forcier, Andrew Pompeo, Steven Scire, CJ Bourque, Chris Picarde, Ryan O’Rourke, Kyle Heath, Steve Mearn, Dave Killop, and Mike DiMattia.
