6-12 Inches of Snow Expected; School Closed in Medford

Story Updated 8AM Friday, December 19, 2008

The first snow storm of the season is expected to bring 6 to 12 inches of snow to Medford and most of New England on Friday.

According to an alert issued by the National Weather Service, snow will likely hit this area sometime after 12PM.  It will snow heavily up into the evening hours before tapering off and then starting up strong again and continuing through the night into Saturday morning.  Snow could fall as heavily as 1 to 2 inches per hour during the peak of the storm.

Strong winds of 25 to 30 miles per hour are expected, as well as gusts up to 45 miles per hour, making visibility poor and driving a hazard.  People are urged to stay off the roads and to take extreme caution if travel is necessary.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 10AM Friday through 3AM Saturday.  School has been closed in Medford and many other communities across the state.

Medford has declared a snow emergency as of 1PM Friday until further notice.  Residents must comply with the winter parking ban (parking on even side only) and there is no street parking on the city’s major roads.

The following streets are designated emergency arteries and no parking is allowed on them during snow emergencies:

Boston Avenue, Central Avenue, College Avenue from George Street to Boston Avenue, Forest Street, Fulton Street, George Street, Governors Avenue, Grove Street, Hancock Street, Harvard Avenue, Harvard Street, High Street, Lawrence Road, Main Street, Medford Street, Mystic Avenue from Main Street to Crescent Street, Playstead Road, Riverside Avenue, Salem Street, Spring Street, Washington Street, Webster Street, Willis Avenue and Winthrop Street.
