Medford Community Housing Seeks to Increase Affordable Housing in Medford

With a slumping economy, home foreclosures on the rise, and a tough real estate market, now is the time to increase affordable housing, according to Medford Community Housing, Inc., members.

Roberta Rubin, a Tufts University and Northeastern School of Law professor, speaking to the group at its annual meeting in November, said the average housing unit in Medford is beyond the financial reach of many of the city’s residents. According to Rubin, local rents have increased 150% over the last decade, far outpacing the consumer price index. She also said that unlike some neighboring communities, there are very few places in Medford to construct new affordable housing units that adhere to the city’s zoning laws.

Rubin urged Medford to adopt “inclusionary zoning” laws that would require a minimum number of affordable housing in new developments. She also encouraged housing advocates to work with property owners to create short-term affordable housing opportunities.

Medford Community Housing, Inc., members also selected new leadership at their annual meeting. Medford resident Cheryl Middleton, a long-time active member, is succeeding outgoing President Kelly Catallo as president. Mark Arena was elected Vice President and Secretary Liz Rohrer, Treasurer Liz Cremens, and Clerk David Brosnan are keeping their current offices.

Medford Housing Development Specialist Laura Glynn was also at the meeting. The city has recently helped Medford Community Housing secure a grant from the North Suburban HOME Consortium.

Medford Community Housing, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation dedicated to developing and protecting affordable housing in the City of Medford. Membership is open to all who live or work in Medford, and new members are always welcome. For more information, contact Kelly Catallo at 781-844-5457.
