Medford Hockey Upsets Woburn, Advances in States

The Medford High School varsity ice hockey team shocked Woburn with a 2-1 upset victory Wednesday night in the first round of the state tournament. Medford, 7-13, was the bottom seed at #14 while Woburn, 13-4-3, was the third seed.

The exciting win was the result of a shootout, following a 1-1 and scoreless overtime.  Greater Boston League top scorer and captain Steve Servideo got the Mustangs’ first goal and CJ Bourque came through with the winning goal.  John Ghiozzi and Greg Wilson also nabbed goals in the shootout.

Despite a valiant effort on Saturday, Medford came up short against St. Mary’s (#11, 9-8-3), 3-1.

The boys clinched the Greater Boston League title and remain undefeated in the GBL, though they have had trouble winning non-leaugue games.

The Mustangs are led by captain Servideo, assistant captains Brett Cavallaro, Josef Danilchuk, and Steve Mearn, goalies Michael Gendreau and Jimmy Cecchini, forwards Greg Wilson, John Ghiozzi, Billy Ivey, Matt White, Tommy Lee, Bourque, Shaun McConnell, Chris Silva, Nick Adrizzoni, Brian Enos, Guy Leone, Tyler Zizzo, and Patrick Trainor, and defenders Nick Borges, Corbin Aurilio, Kyle Doran, and Cameron Howard. The team is coached by Head Coach Chuck Allen and assistant coaches Joe Deroeve and Bob Goodwin.

Girls Track Takes 2nd in Greater Boston League Meet
The Medford High School girls indoor track team pulled out an impressive performance over the February vacation break and earned second place at the Greater Boston League meet with 88 points. The girls took the top spots in a variety of events. Senior captain Kat Picarde won the mile with a time of 6:11, while the 4 x 200 relay team of Ariana Fiorello, Danielle Joseph, Keshanna Delsignore, and Jasmyn Hawkins nabbed second place in 1:51.99 and the 4 x 400 relay team of Picarde, Meghan Woods, McKenzie Flynn, and Hawa Dumbuya also earned second with a time of 4:42.88. Other Mustangs contributing to the win include: Anya Pierre-Louis, 2nd place, 55 meter hurdles, 9.45; Fiorello, 3rd place, 55 meter dash, 7.75; Hawkins, 4th place, 55 meter dash, 7.85; Delsignore, 3rd place, 300 meter dash, 45.69; Woods, 2nd place, 600 meter run, 1:51.93; Flynn, 2nd place, 1000 meter run, 3:35.95; Dumbuya, 4th place, 1000 meter run, 3:41; Dumbuya, 3rd place, High jump, 4-04; and Fiorello, 2nd place, long jump, 15-04.5.

Girls Basketball Coach Resigns
Medford High School girls varsity basketball coach Brian Sacco has resigned, according to a report in the Medford Daily Mercury. According to the report, Sacco decided it was time to move on and with a young family, he didn’t have the time and energy to put into the program. Sacco has been the coach for the past six seasons, two of which he qualified for the state tournament.
