Medford Housing Authority to Receive $1M in Federal $$

Kerry, Kennedy Announced $82 Million in Federal Stimulus Cash for MA Housing

The Medford Housing Authority will receive $1,013,263 in federal stimulus money as part of a recovery package aimed at public housing, Senators Edward Kennedy and John Kerry announced Tuesday.

Massachusetts will receive nearly $82 million in federal funding for public housing.

The funding will allow local housing agencies to address long-standing improvements to public housing units, create jobs, and increase energy efficiency. The funding may also be used to make large-scale improvements and make plumbing and electrical systems more energy efficient.

The funding, which is allocated through a previously established formula, effectively doubles the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s annual support of local housing authorities.

“The housing crisis has walloped Massachusetts , and mayors everywhere are looking for relief. This investment will create jobs today, build affordable housing so struggling families can get back on their feet, and put plumbers and electricians to work improving energy efficiency and updating plumbing and electrical systems,” said Sen. Kerry.

“Countless families across our Commonwealth have been devastated by the housing crisis and have no place to turn. It’s essential to provide this necessary assistance so that housing authorities across Massachusetts can keep up with the increased need, and reduce costs for families who would otherwise have no place to call home,” said Sen. Kennedy.
