It’s the end of the road for the Mustang varsity softball team, as the girls wrapped up the season with a Memorial Day tournament and fell just shy of qualifying for states.

The Medford Lady Mustangs finished 3rd in the first Memorial Day softball tournament hosted by Arlington High School over the holiday weekend.

After losing a very hard fought opening day game against Cape Ann League champion North Reading, the Medford girls exploded for twenty runs and twenty-one hits against home team Arlington. The booming bats of tournament Greater Boston League All-Stars junior captain Nicole Lopilato and senior captain Kim Perault led the Lady Mustangs’ offensive assault. Lopilato had four hits, including two home runs, six RBI’s, and four runs scored along with two stolen bases while teammate Perault added three hits (single, double, and triple, three RBI’s, two runs scored, and two stolen bases).

Sophomore speedster Kasey Moran contributed three hits, three runs and three stolen bases and senior captain Jen Bove had two hits, four runs, and two stolen bases. Senior Tori Deasy and sophomore Sarah Moulton added two hits each.

In the first game played against perennial powerhouse North Reading, the Mustang squad held their own before falling short 10-8. Once again the Lady Mustangs were led by Perault with two hits, a triple and a single, two RBI’s and two runs scored. Other players contributing to the attack with one hit apiece were Lopilato, senior Lisa Furtardo, sophomores Kristina Bove (triple) and Moran, and freshmen Jackie Pellecchia and Emily Welch.

The Medford team finished the season with an overall record of 8 wins and 11 losses. In the Greater Boston League they finished in third place with a record of 7-5.

The team’s seniors will be honored at the M-Club awards banquet on Tuesday night.  The MVP will be announced.  Lopilato (3rd Base), Moran (Right Field), and Perault (Shortstop) were named to the Greater Boston League All-Star team.
