Globe Posts Top 100 Salaries in Medford

The Boston Globe has posted a list of the top 100 highest-paid public employees in Medford.

The highest paid city employee in 2008 was Police Captain Alan Doherty, who earned $165,880.19. According to the Globe’s analysis, seventy-seven of the top 100 highest-paid employees earned more than $100,000, and forty-seven of the seventy-seven were police officers.

Police Chief Leo Sacco told the Globe that low staffing levels and overtime boosted officers’ pay by more than twenty percent in 2008. He said it is cheaper in the long run to have fewer full-time officers and to pay officers overtime to cover. However, Chief Sacco said that can take its toll on the officers and he’d rather have the staffing. He said Medford has 110 officers now, compared to 132 in 2001.

Mayor Michael McGlynn was 6th on the top 100 list, earning $138,426.11 in 2008.

‘‘I work very hard at what I do and I feel that I earn every penny I make,’’ Mayor McGlynn told the Globe.

The Globe obtained the salary information from a Freedom of Information request. Click here to see the full list.
