The Medford Chamber of Commerce and Medford TV and Electronics are sponsoring a free holiday concert at Chevalier Theatre.

The concert, “Our Holiday Gift to You: Holiday Pops Concert 2009,” is planned for 7PM on Friday, December 4 and will be part of a week of holiday activities in Medford.

The Navy Band Northeast Wind Ensemble, stationed in Newport, RI, will perform. According to information provided by the Boston Navy outreach office, the unit typically performs the standard repertoire associated with military bands and wind ensembles, as well as selections from Broadway musicals, current popular artists, and sounds of the big band era.

“The variety of music and versatility of the ensemble is sure to please audiences of all ages,” said a statement from the office.

The concert is free and open to the public. Tickets for the concert can be picked up at Medford TV and Electronics, 25 Salem Street, the Chamber Office, 1 Shipyard Way, or by calling 781-396-1277. Groups of 20 or more may reserve blocks of tickets.

John Costas, owner of Medford TV and Electronics, said the free event is intended to be a gift given in the spirit of the holiday season.

“It’s something we wanted to do for the community,” said Costas.

In addition to the concert, artwork created by 7th and 8th grade Medford students will be hanging in the lobby of the theatre. Eight winners of a poetry contest open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will also read their poems before the performance. The winning poems and each of the poems submitted to the contest will be printed in the concert programs. The student poetry and artwork portion of the event was made possible by a Medford Arts Council grant.

Finally, Boy Scout troop 423 will present the colors and the “Night Before Christmas” will be read. Santa Claus is also rumored to be making an appearance at the event!
