Medford Boys Hoops Splits Holiday Tourney

Mustangs Beat Plymouth South, Fall to Rockland

– Allison Goldsberry

The Medford High School boys varsity basketball team split the Rockland High School Christmas tournament with a decisive victory and a close loss.

The Mustangs easily put down Plymouth South, 60-38. Senior captain Andrew White had 28 points. But the bigger story was Medford’s defense, which held Plymouth to just ten points in the first half.

“It was a great defensive effort,” said Head Coach Anthony Faradie.

The victory put the Mustangs in a championship game against Rockland. Coach Faradie said it was a “very physical game in a hostile environment” that was “real close the whole way.” Despite being down only 32-30 at the half, Medford ending up losing 66-56. The Mustangs were 20-31 at the free throw line and Rockland wasn’t much better at 23-34. White led the team with twenty-seven points, while Larry Keating and Tevin Moore each had ten points. Keating was the leading rebounder with eight rebounds and Kadeem Smith and White each pulled down six rebounds.

White was selected to the all-tourney team and Rockland’s Phil Comeau was selected as the tourney’s MVP.

Next up for Medford is a Sunday afternoon game at Xaverian on January 3. The Mustangs will then host Everett on Tuesday, January 5 at 7PM.
