Varsity, JV, Frosh Baseball Defeat Somerville

Highlanders No Match for Mighty Mustangs

– Allison Goldsberry

The Mustang varsity, junior varsity, and freshman baseball team each pulled out lopsided victories against Somerville on Tuesday afternoon.

The varsity ‘stangs were up 17-0 when the game was shortened by rain after five innings. Senior Mike Sullivan pitched the five inning shut out.

Sophomore Sam Perez, a recent JV call up, clubbed his first varsity pitch he saw over the left field fence for a 3-run home run in the 1st inning to give the Mustangs an early 5-0 lead. The Mustangs’ offensive attack was impressive, with senior captain Danny Gunn, Danny Gilchrist, John Mangiasi, Andrew Waldrip, Perez, and senior captain Kyle Heath all with multiple hits, said Head Coach Nick Tucci.

Medford improved its record to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the Greater Boston League. They will be back in action on Thursday vs Cambridge at Playstead Park at 4:00PM.

For the fourth straight game a different freshman pitcher has led the Mustang JV Baseball team to a win, said JV Coach Vin Macone. John Lavoie pitched a 1-hit 10-0 win against Somerville, with his combination of changeup, curveball and fastball keeping the Highlanders hitters off-balance the entire game.

Lavoie struck out eight while walking two and the only hit he allowed came in the fourth inning. Lavoie followed classmates Corey Devlin, Chris Hayes and Sean Doncaster on the mound. This quartet of pitchers have allowed a mere 5 earned runs over the past four games, striking out a combined thirty-two batters while only walking nine with two shutouts, said Coach Macone.

The game was tied in the bottom of the second until Steve Center and Nick Rocco scored to give the Mustang JV’s a 2-0 lead. Mike Pizzi scored in the third to extend the lead to 3-0 after three innings. The Mustang JV offense exploded for six runs in the fourth to put the game away.

The next JV game is Thursday, April 29 vs Cambridge at Hickey Park at 4:00PM. The team is currently undefeated at 7-0 and is 2-0 in the GBL.

Finally, the freshman baseball team defeated Somerville 9-3 on Tuesday. They head to Cambridge on Thursday for a 4:00PM game.
