Five Medford Brothers Served in WWII

A plaque embedded in a stone was recently dedicated in honor of five Medford brothers who served during World War II. The memorial, located in West Medford at the intersection of Arlington and Canal Streets, recognizes William, Cecil, Ernest, Richard, and Raymond Phillips for their service.

The dedication ceremony on October 3 included the Pledge of Allegiance by the great-grandchildren of William, Cheryl and David Dascomb and Rosa Van Wie; remarks by Phillips family members Beverly “Mitzi” Dascomb, William’s daughter and Dorothy Phillips, Ernest’s daughter; singing by Medford High junior Kyla Middleton; the dedication of the Phillips Brothers corner by Mayor Michael McGlynn; the unveiling of the stone by members of the Phillips family; an invocation by Reverend John Page of the Shiloh Baptist Church; a benediction by Reverend Veronica Lanier; the posting of colors by Sergeant First Class Rayon Everett, Staff Sergeant Colon, and Sergeant Mark Davis of the US Army; and music by MHS Alumni Band.

    I believe Kenneth Smith (Sr.) of Morrison St., Medford, and his 4 brothers also served in WWII. Their names are on the WWII monument more recently dedicated.
