The last time the boys varsity basketball team met Everett, they suffered a 5-point loss. This time the Mustangs defended their turf against the visiting Crimson Tide, defeating them 90-82.

Medford was down 50-42 at halftime and battled back for the victory by doing a better job of taking care of the ball in the second half and wearing Everett down with their press, said Head Coach Anthony Faradie.

Ten Mustangs scored, including junior guard Maurice Magras, who led all scorers with twenty-four points, Sean Doncaster, who chipped in with nineteen points, and Danny Gilchrist, who added twelve. Doncaster and Gilchrist, two of the team’s big shooters, got in early foul trouble in the first quarter, leaving it up to the rest of the team to pick up the slack, including junior guard Anthony Tortora, who “made some big hustle plays” for his team.

“He was scrappy and really made an impact,” said Coach Faradie.

Owen Healey also helped out the Mustangs, hitting two big three-point shots in the second half.

The Mustangs were plus thirteen in the turnover ratio and shot the ball 13-48 from the three point line. The difference was at the free throw line, with Medford 19-22 and Everett only 6-16.

Medford is currently 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the Greater Boston League. Up next for the Mustangs is a 3-game road trip. They head to Somerville on Tuesday, February 1, Cambridge on Friday, February 4, and Malden Catholic on Tuesday, February 8. The next home game is against Malden on Friday, February 11.
