Mustangs Fall in First Round of State Tournament

The girls varsity basketball team opened up the first round of the state tournament on the road at Lincoln-Sudbury on Tuesday, March 1. It was unfortunately the first and last state tournament game for Medford, who lost 74-44.

The Lady Mustangs, 14-6, earned a bye in the preliminary round and were seeded 9th out of eighteen teams in the North Division 1. Lincoln-Sudbury, also 14-6, earned a bye and was seeded 8th. Cambridge, also 14-6, seeded 7th, earned a bye and advanced to the quarter finals by soundly defeating Chelmsford, 73-53.

The Lady Mustangs earned an 8-0 Greater Boston League record and won the league title for the first time since the Mustang Hall of Fame 1991/1992 team. They are coached by Leo Burke, who is in his second season as head coach. The varsity team includes sophomore guard Kathleen Callahan, junior forward Jackie Pellechia, sophomore forward Mariah Vasquez, senior guard and captain Kasey Moran, junior forward Emily Welch, junior forward Bianca Nargi, junior forward Kathryn Ellersick, senior guard Lindsey Bandoian, sophomore guard Martha Nkangabwa, junior guard and captain Tania Holmes, sophomore forward Aleah Mc’Ausland-Ace, sophomore forward Lydia Regan, and freshman forward Sarah Donnelly.
