Baseball Team Looking for GBL Wins

The varsity baseball team’s 9-5 victory over Cambridge on Thursday improves the Mustangs’ record to 7-1 and is the second Greater Boston League victory of the season for Medford.

Senior Danny Gilchrist led the Mustangs on the mound, striking out four and giving up one earned run in six innings pitched. Gilchrist improves his record to 4-0 and with twenty-six innings pitched so far on the season, has an ERA of 1.08 with thirty-five strike outs.

Gilchrist also led the offense with a homerun and four RBI’s. Senior captain Tom Flores was 2-3 with an RBI and three runs scored and senior captain Chris Salvati was 2-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Next week’s games will be important in establishing the GBL pecking order. Medford will head to Everett on Tuesday, May 3 and will host Malden, who they lost to earlier in the season, on Thursday, May 5.

The Malden game is a definite must-see for all Mustang baseball fans! In addition to what’s sure to be a great game, the Mustangs will be holding a special fundraiser in conjunction with Sentry Ford Lincoln of Medford. Ford will have several cars at Playstead Park between 2pm and 6pm and for every test drive the team will earn $20, up to $6,000. Last fall a similar fundraiser for the football team and band was very successful and both the baseball team and Sentry Ford Lincoln hope for a great turnout.

Senior pitcher Danny Gilchrist leads his team on the mound as well as offensively. With twenty-seven at-bats and a .556 batting average, he’s collected fifteen hits, eighteen RBI’s, and six homeruns.

Senior captain Chris Salvati also leads his team on the mound and at bat. He’s tossed three victories for the Mustangs, striking out twenty-eight along the way and allowing only fourteen hits with a 2.45 ERA. He’s also batting .500 with eleven hits and eight RBI’s.

Tom Flores at bat

Senior captain Tom Flores has been an offensive leader for the team, batting .393 and adding eleven hits, seven RBI’s, and a homerun. Other offensive leaders include sophomore catcher Nick Rocco (.444), senior Nick Murphy (.429), Chris Hayes (.417), and senior Steve Scire (.381).
