The varsity baseball team hung in to win a tight one over Waltham on Tuesday. Sophomore John Lavoie “was huge” for the Mustangs in the 3-2 victory, picking up his second varsity win, according to Head Coach Mike Nestor.

“John Lavoie is quickly becoming a star pitcher in this league with his excellent pitching. His composure on the mound is rarely seen in a sophomore, which is a huge part of pitching,” said Coach Nestor.

Coach Nestor also said the sophomore class is “one of the most talented classes in awhile.”

“It could be scary when they are seniors and carry themselves like quality young adults,” said Nestor.

Lavoie pitched a full seven innings against Waltham, giving up one earned run and striking out two. Pat Duffy was 2-3 with a run scored, while senior captain Chris Salvati and senior Steve Scire each contributed an RBI single. Nick Rocco had an RBI single and a run scored and Mike Pizzi reached base each of his three times at bat and scored a run.

The Mustangs are currently 13-4 overall, with Wednesday’s win over Stoneham, and are 4-4 in the Greater Boston League. They head to Whittier Tech on Thursday and participate in the annual Holovak and Coughlin Memorial Day tournament in Arlington this weekend. On Saturday Medford, Malden Catholic, Arlington, and Arlington Catholic will take the field, with Medford and MC and Arlington and AC scheduled first. The winners of those games will play each other and the “runners-up” will also play. Last year the Mustangs earned their first ever tournament victory and they’re looking for a repeat!
