After falling to local rival Malden Catholic 2-0 on Saturday, the varsity baseball team defeated Arlington in the consolation game on Sunday in the annual Holovak and Coughlin tournament.

Medford edged Arlington, 5-4, in nine innings after senior captain Tom Flores, pictured above, drove in the winning run. Senior captain Chris Salvati pitched for seven innings, giving up only two earned runs and striking out three while John Lavoie pitched two innings of relief and got the win on the hill for Medford. Salvati was 3-5 with a double, RBI, and run scored, Sean Doncaster was 3-4 with an RBI, senior captain Danny Gilchrist was 2-5 with two doubles, and Nick Rocco was 1-2 , contributing a key sacrifice bunt that set up the game-winning hit.

The regular season is now over for the 15-5 Mustangs, who will receive their state tournament seeding on Tuesday, May 31.
