Softball, Baseball Teams Open State Tourney Friday

While both the baseball and softball teams will open up the state tournament on the same day only the baseball team will be at home.

On Friday, June 3 the 15-5 Mustangs, seeded 6th out of twenty teams in North Division 1, will host Chelmsford (#11, 13-7) at 4:00PM at Playstead Park. The winner of that game will play on June 6 and could face Everett (#3, 17-3), Newton South (#14, 12-8), or Lynn English (#19, 10-10).

Other local teams participating in the tournament include Malden Catholic (#13, 12-8), Cambridge (#12, 11-7), and Malden (#16, 11-9). MC kicks off the tournament on Thursday, June 2 at home at 4:00PM vs Newton North (#20, 10-10). The winner will head to Peabody (#4, 16-4) on June 4.

Arlington Catholic also qualified and will participate in the North Division 3 tournament. The 11-9 Cougars are seeded 11th out of nineteen teams and will play #6 seed Lynnfield (13-7) on June 4. Matignon, last year’s Division 4 North champion, is seeded 9th out of ten teams and is 7-13 heading into the tournament. The Warriors head to Rockport (#8, 9-9) on June 2.

On Friday the 15-5 Lady Mustangs, seeded 9th out of nineteen teams in North Division 1, head to #8 seed Boston Latin, also 15-5. The winner will play either Chelmsford (#1, 19-1), Beverly (#16, 11-9), or Andover (#17, 10-10).

Malden (#3, 17-3), like Medford has earned a bye in the preliminary round. The Golden Tornadoes will host either Lexington (#14, 14-8) or Westford (#19, 10-10) on June 4. Everett (#11, 14-6), could potentially wind up playing Malden in the quarter finals. They go to Bishop Fenwick (#6, 15-4) on June 2. Matignon and Mystic Valley, both 12-8, will participate in the North Division 3 tournament. Arlington Catholic, 11-9, faces Saugus, 17-3, on the road on June 4 in the North Division 2 tournament.
