Boston, NYC Mayors Team Up for Super Bowl Ad

Putting Football Rivalries Aside, Menino, Bloomberg Unite Against Illegal Guns

On Super Bowl Sunday, amid the ads for beer, Doritos, and godaddy.com, there will be an ad that plays on the Boston/New York rivalry with a serious message.

Boston Mayor Tom Menino and New York Mayor (and Medford native) Michael Bloomberg have paired up for an ad about keeping illegal guns out of the hands of dangerous people. The ad is part of a campaign by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan coalition of more than 600 mayors from across the country, to help crack down on illegal guns. The organization was founded by Mayor Bloomberg and receives much of its funding from his own personal fortune, according to a Reuters story about MAIG. Bloomberg and Menino are co-chairs of MAIG, which was launched in April 2006.

Despite his local roots, Mayor Bloomberg will be at the Super Bowl rooting for the hated Giants. Bloomberg and Menino have a friendly wager on the game that involves the losing city hosting a family from the winning city for a special trip.
