MC Repeats as Super 8 Champion

A 3-1 win over BC High in the Super 8 hockey final on Sunday made Malden Catholic just the third team to win back to back championships.

The Lancers pulled out the victory in the final period of the game, according to Boston.com.

The win was an emotional one for the team, who was without head coach Chris Serino this season as he was sidelined with throat cancer.

“The Super 8 Championship game at TD Garden honors Coach Serino and is a tribute to his influence and coaching of these outstanding athletes,” said a statement posted on MC’s website.

Coach John McLean led the Lancers this season, who compiled a 19-1-4 record heading into the state tournament.

“It’s been a very long season mentally and physically,” McLean told Boston.com. “We dug down and we did what we had to do.”

Coach Serino apparently was in the Garden watching his team from the stands.

“We were hoping he’d come tonight. He showed up tonight, came down and was on the ice. It’s been a long journey mentally for these kids and him and the coaching staff and the school. I’m proud of the kids that dug down for him. He’s very, very proud of the boys. It means a lot for us to be able to do that for him,” said McLean.
