Mayor Meets with Japanese Counterpart

Last week Mayor Michael McGlynn met with Nobeoka, Japan Mayor Masaharu Sudo. McGlynn held a special reception for Sudo, his wife, Akiko, and local Japanese business people in his office at City Hall. Nobeoka, Japan, has been Medford’s sister city since 1980 and a special cultural exchange program sponsored by the Medford Rotary Club alternates Medford and Nobeoka students between the two cities. The Rotary Club is currently looking for two high school juniors to send to Japan this summer. Mayor Sudo’s visit comes on the heels of a special ceremony recently held at Medford High in which the Japanese Consulate and the Japanese Language School of Greater Boston donated three cherry trees to the school to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first cherry trees were donated by Japan to America.
