Free Community Concert October 14

The Tufts University Department of Music and Tufts Composers present guest artists ANA Trio in concert on Sunday, October 14, 2012 at 3 p.m. in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center as part of the Sundays at Tufts – Community Concert Series.

ANA Trio is made up of soprano Angela Haas, cellist Natasha Farny, and pianist Anne Kissel Harper. The trio will perform a series of premieres and commissions, featuring pieces by Rob Deemer (“Snow”, with poetry by Sara Teasdale), Daron Arik Hagen (“Rapture and Regret”, with text from Virginia Woolf’s The Waves and Isak Dinesen’s Out of Africa; choreography by Helen Myers), Caroline Mallonée, and John McDonald’s new work, “Courbet’s Impromptu Farewells.”

At 2:30 p.m., a screening of Judith Wechsler’s film, Courbet: Dreaming the Modern, will precede the concert.

Haas, Farny, and Kissel together form the unique trio ANA, known for their energized and highly personal performance that combine the complex timbres of chamber music with the intimacy of the song recital. The trio currently serves on the music faculty at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

Blind Musician to Perform at Tufts October 18

The Tufts University Department of Music presents a performance by Sorie Kondi in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 8 p.m.

Sorie Kondi, on his first tour outside of his native country of Sierra Leone, will perform traditional and original songs and music of the Kondi. The kondi, sometimes called a “thumb piano”, is part of a family of African instruments that includes the mbira and kalimba. Sorie Kondi plays and sings in the style of the Loko people of Sierra Leone, and his repertoire includes songs with a mixture of humorous themes and serious commentaries based on his life experiences.
