Tufts University Department of Music presents Geoff Brown and Hickory Strings November 10

The Tufts University Department of Music presents a performance by Geoff Brown and Hickory Strings in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 8 p.m.

Boston-based Hickory Strings is an eclectic string ensemble, fusing elements of jazz, bluegrass, classical, and world music into a unique brand of modern American chamber music. Led by Tufts performance faculty member, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Geoff Brown (mandolin, Bulgarian tambura, and tenor banjo), the band features original music arranged for an assortment of acoustic string instruments.

The member line up is completed by Gian Pangaro (double bass) and Tev Stevig (oud, guitar, and banjo). For more information about Hickory Strings, visit www.hickorystrings.com.

Tufts “Small Jazz Concerts” November 11, 15, & 18

The Tufts University Department of Music is pleased to announce three performances by the Tufts Small Jazz Ensembles. All performances are held in the Granoff Music Center.

The first, entitled Express Yourself, features Joel LaRue Smith’s small jazz ensemble and the Tufts Jazz Choir led by Tisha Stadnicki. The ensembles combine to play music from Aretha Franklin and the Great American Song Book, and show how jazz will give you the opportunity to express yourself! This performance will be held Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fisher Performance Room.

The second concert features three of Nando Michelin’s small jazz ensembles performing an evening of works for smaller combos. Held in Distler Performance Hall, this performance will be Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 8:00 p.m.

Last, but not least, Scott Aruda and Paul Ahlstrand’s small jazz ensembles offer a good dose funk, rock, latin, swing, and bebop in Jazz Apocalypso. This concert will get you moving in your seat and cure your winter blues! This concert will be held Sunday, November 18, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fisher Performance Room.

A concert by Al-bustan’s Takht Ensemble Music of Morocco and Al-andalus Featuring Karima Skalli November 16

The Tufts University Department of Music presents a performance by vocalist Karima Skalli and the Al-Bustan’s Takht Ensemble, “Music of Morocco and Al-Andalus”, in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 8 p.m. This concert is part of the Al-Bustan Arab Music Concert Series and is co-sponsored by the Arab Student Association and the Middle Eastern Studies program at Tufts. The concert of classical and contemporary Arab music will feature Moroccan vocalist Karima Skalli, in performance with Al-Bustan’s Takht Ensemble led by Music Director Hanna Khoury on violin, Kinan Idnawi on oud, Hicham Chami on qanun, Kinan Abou-afach on cello, and Hafez El Ali Kotain on percussion.
