The Medford High School girls varsity basketball and hockey teams each won their preliminary rounds in the state tournament.

The GBL champion Lady Mustang basketball team, 10-10, is ranked sixteenth out of seventeen teams in North Division 1. Medford defeated Chelmsford (#17, 8-10) 52-50 at home on Monday night.

Video highlights of the Chelmsford home win are available on the school website.

Unfortunately for Medford, their state tournament run ended on Thursday night with a road loss to top seed Lynn English (20-2).

The girls varsity hockey team, 10-7-3, is ranked eighteenth out of twenty-six teams in Division 1. The Lady Mustangs defeated Medway/Ashland (#15, 11-6-3) 5-1 on the road on Wednesday night.

Brittani Lanzilli led the way with 4 goals and an assist, according to Coach Dave McCarthy. Marissa Williams also contributed with 3 assists while sophomore goalie Ashley Rodriquez stopped 18 shots in the winning effort.

Medford now faces second seed Beverly/Danvers (16-2-2). The game is taking place at 1:30PM on Saturday, March 2 at Salem State University.

A win for the girls basketball or hockey team would mean a spot in the quarter finals.
