Somerville High Soccer Player Accused of Alleged Sexual Assault Released on Bail

– Allison Goldsberry

A seventeen-year-old member of the Somerville High School boys soccer team facing charges in connection with an alleged sexual assault was released on $100,000 bail following a dangerousness hearing on Friday, according to information released by Berkshire District Attorney David F. Capeless and WBZ News Radio.

Galileo Mondol pleaded not guilty at his arraignment last week to one count of aggravated rape of a child under sixteen, two counts of assault with intent to rape a child under sixteen, one count of indecent assault and battery on a person who has attained fourteen years of age, three counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, and three counts of intimidation of a witness or other person.

After Mondol’s family posted bail, a judge ordered Mondol to have no contact whatsoever with the victims or witnesses; to stop attending Somerville High School; to abide by an 11PM curfew unless accompanied by his parents; and to surrender his passport.

Mondol and two 16-year-old juvenile males were arrested in August on charges that include aggravated rape and assault with intent to rape in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred at the school’s annual sports camp in Western Massachusetts.

Authorities say the incident allegedly took place at Camp Otis in Lenox, which had been rented by Somerville for team-building activities for its fall sports teams. The three JV soccer players are accused of entering a cabin with freshmen students and assaulting three victims on Sunday, August 25.

Two juveniles who were also alleged to be involved in the incident were arraigned on similar charges.

According to WBZ, Somerville High School is in the process of expelling Mondol.

School started in Somerville last week, and according to local officials, support services are in place to help the community cope with the fallout from the incident.

“We remain moved by the courage shown by the victims in speaking up, in awe of the compassion shown by our students and whole community in response to these sad and disturbing allegations, and will continue to focus our energy and efforts on providing support to all those impacted by this incident and in helping our community begin the healing process,” said the statement.
