Medford to Add More Veterans to Honor Roll Park

This Sunday, November 3rd at 1:00 PM at Honor Roll Park (beside Temple Shalom), Mayor Michael J. McGlynn will be dedicating a plaque to Medford Veterans who have served in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Their names, engraved on a bronze plaque, will be unveiled during this memorable ceremony directed by the Massachusetts National Guard.

The event will feature the Mount Rushmore American Flag, which is nine stories high, and will be raised by a crane as part of the ceremony. Medford’s own Stephen St. Germain will donate his time operating the crane from Amquip Crane Rental from South Boston. In addition, members of the Massachusetts National Guard’s 101st Field Artillery Unit will accompany the raising of the flag with an official Howitzer salute. Music specifically timed for the flag raising/salute, will include “My Country Tis of Thee,” and the “Star Spangled Banner.”

“Just the massive size of this flag truly makes it something for all to see,” said the Mayor.

The Master of Ceremonies for the event will be Medford’s own Dominic Marcellino, a United States Marine, Vietnam Veteran and triple amputee. Dominic is a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He also serves as President of the Disabled and Limbless Veterans Association, Inc.

Medford’s Alumni Band will be providing music for the event. Songs that may be performed include the “Navy Hymn,” the “Washington Post March” and “El Capitan,” to name a few.

Seating will be provided. People are asked to park at Medford High School. Buses will be available to shuttle people to the site. Please be advised that no parking will be allowed at Temple Shalom.

“This will be a memorable event for these veterans and their families. It is my hope that our citizens will join with us as we thank these veterans for their dedication to duty, honor, country,” said Mayor McGlynn.
