Medford Native to Provide Medical Planning, Coverage for Athletic Events

Medford native Dave McGillivray, Boston Marathon race director and founder/owner of sports events management firm DMSE Sports, released the following statement about new services to help sports event managers improve medical planning for their events.

DMSE Sports, a leading sports events management firm based near Boston, today announced the launch of a medical consulting partnership to improve medical and public safety coverage at large-scale athletic events in the U.S. and worldwide.

DMSE Medical will provide expertise to help managers of road races, triathlons, charity walks and other mass participatory events evaluate, plan and implement more effective medical programs.

DMSE Medical will be led by Chris Troyanos, ATC, who has served as Medical Services Coordinator for the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) for the past 25 years and provided medical guidance to some of the largest races in the country. He was instrumental in the pre-planning of the 2013 B.A.A. Boston Marathon and the coordinated response after the tragic events of April 15.

“Chris has extensive experience in coordinating and evaluating medical needs for large-scale events,” said Dave McGillivray, a well-known race director and endurance athlete who founded DMSE Sports in 1981. “Given the incredible growth of participation in our sport, the single most important aspect requiring professional assistance is in the area of medical coverage. DMSE Medical was developed specifically to address this overwhelming need in our industry.”

As road races and events of all sizes continue to grow in popularity throughout the U.S. and abroad, he added, the demands placed on event directors continue to expand beyond normal race day operations.

“Medical coverage is an area that is sometimes underestimated or even overlooked amidst a sea of logistics and operational tasks that event directors have traditionally thought of as their top priorities,” said McGillivray, who is the longtime Race Director of the B.A.A. Boston Marathon and a number of other major road races.

Troyanos, who lives in Norfolk, Mass., was recently named the Executive Director of the International Institute for Race Medicine (IIRM). The IIRM is an organization that is dedicated to medical education and research for all endurance events.

“The running/road race industry has experienced tremendous growth and with that growth, concerns regarding runner safety and the impact on the public safety remain paramount to every event,” Troyanos said. “DMSE Medical is designed to address those concerns and to make sure every event has medical standards that can stand up to any public review.”
