‘Turkish Songs of Protest’ Concert April 1st

The Tufts University Department of Music presents a performance by the Dünya Ensemble in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at 8 p.m. entitled Dün gece seyrim içinde/Last night I dreamt of…: Turkish Songs of Protest. The Dünya Ensemble will present songs by men and women in the Ottoman region from the 16th century to the present that question political and religious authority and object to accepted traditions, offering alternative visions of power, race, sexuality, and belief.

The event will also feature an academic panel on music and protest in Iran, Tunisia, and Turkey with presentations by Kamran Rastegar (Tufts University), Richard Jankowsky (Tufts University), and Mehmet Ali Sanl?kol (Emerson College and College of the Holy Cross), moderated by Bob Labaree (New England Conservatory). The panel will take place in the Varis Lecture Hall from 4:30-6:00 p.m.
