Machine Fantasies Concert April 5

The Tufts University Department of Music presents the Machine Fantasies Concert in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 8 p.m. as part of the Machine Fantasies Workshops.

The Machine Fantasies Workshop brings together composers, performers, scholars, and engineers to explore new and old musical instruments, interactive systems for performance and composition, and the origins and implications of our profound emotional involvements with musical technologies over the centuries. With a keynote by noted composer and scholar George Lewis, “Why do we want our machines to improvise?”, the workshop will include popular, classical, and other world music traditions. Participants will bring perspectives from musicology, ethnomusicology, composition, performance, sound studies, the history of science and technology, and engineering. The workshop will conclude with a concert of live electroacoustic music involving piano, oud, percussion, electric guitar, iPad, and metronome.

The workshop culminates with the Machine Fantasies Concert, a concert of live electroacoustic music involving piano, oud, percussion, electric guitar, iPad, and metronome. Featured performers include Eliot Bates, Christopher Burns, Mike D’Errico, Margaret Schedele, Chris Howard, Hans Tutschku, Rane Moore, Daniel Weymouth, and John McDonald.
