City Breaks Ground on New DPW Yard

DPW yard ground breaking

On Friday, May 2, 2014 Mayor Michael J. McGlynn presided over the ground breaking of the State of the Art new Department of Public Works Yard at 21 James Street.

The original yard, built in 1937 as a WPA project, was demolished last July to make way for the new facility, which will enable the DPW to provide the best and most efficient services to the citizens of Medford. The new yard will feature energy efficient lighting, salt storage, a covered canopy for fleet, solar ready roof, a separate recycling center, and rain water harvest to use in the wash bay for the fleet.

Jeff Alberti of Weston & Sampson, Matthew Groves of Browne & Caldwell, Denis MacDougall of the City’s Energy Office and Mike Nestor, President of Local 25 DPW workers, all spoke about the importance and benefits of this new facility for both workers and the general public.

Mayor McGlynn said once finished, the new DPW building will bear the name of former Mayor Alfred P. Pompeo, Sr., a gentleman who served the city on the City Council and School Committee for over six decades. Mayor Pompeo also served as the Director of Guidance at Medford High School. Always known as “The Voice of Reason” in his elected career, Mayor Pompeo, a decorated World War II Veteran and P.O.W., was known as a man of great vision, great integrity and an all around great person.

“We are proud to be able to name this facility after such a great leader of our community,” said Mayor McGlynn.
