Golf Balls to Drop from Helicopter to Raise Money for Scholarship Fund

Mayor Michael J. McGlynn today announced the establishment of a scholarship in memory of longtime Saving Lives Director and Community Development Board Chairman, Ben Averbook. Five, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to Medford High School students graduating in 2015.

“Ben Averbook, former Medford Saving Lives Director and Community Development Board Chairperson, volunteered countless hours of his time for so many community wide activities in this City. Since his passing, many people have approached me wanting to establish something in Ben’s memory,” said Mayor McGlynn.

Therefore, during the 26th Annual Mayor’s Open a golf ball drop will be held. 500 golf balls will be sold at $20 per golf ball and dropped from a helicopter at the beginning of the Mayor’s Open Golf Tournament on Friday, May 23rd, at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, Massachusetts. Interested parties can make a $20 per golf ball donation that will go towards the Ben Averbook Scholarship Fund as well as the Ben Averbook/Wallace Kountze Community Day to be held in the Fall.

The three golf balls that either fall into the hole, or are closest to the hole, will win the following:

(2) Red Sox tickets and an overnight stay at the Marriott Boston,
(2) Red Sox tickets and an overnight stay at the Seaport Hotel,
(2) Red Sox tickets and an overnight stay at the Millenium Boston Hotel.

Local realtor John Veneziano is graciously covering the cost of the helicopter due to his longtime friendship with Ben.

Those interested in making a donation in Ben’s memory should contact Lisa Evangelista in the Mayor’s Office via email at levangelista@medford.org or at (781) 393-2409. Checks should be made payable to City of Medford Community Day. All donations must be received by Lisa no later than May 15th.
