Andrews Middle School Presents ‘The Sound of Music’

The Andrews Middle School is proud to announce this year’s spring musical — the school version of The Sound of Music. Over one hundred Andrews Middle School students will take the stage at the McGlynn Middle School auditorium on Friday evening, May 30, with a second evening performance on Saturday, May 31.

The Sound of Music had its Broadway debut in 1959, but is most known for the 1965 film adaptation starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won five Academy Awards. It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. The story unfolds at the brink of World War II in Austria, where an ex-military man, Captain Von Trapp, takes on a new governess, Maria – a nun too free spirited for any convent, to look after his over-disciplined children. The rebellious Von Trapp children and their father first reject Maria, but quickly learn to love her free spirited nature. Captain Von Trapp does not agree with Austria’s position in the war, and he and his family must flee from the Nazis who want to tear his family, newly invigorated with love and joy, thanks to Maria, apart. Many songs from the musical have become standards, such as “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and the title song “The Sound of Music.” The Sound of Music was the final musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Tickets for The Sound of Music will be on sale beginning May 17 at the Andrews Middle School. They can be purchased by students during the school day or by emailing Sarah Grant (sgrant@medford.k12.ma.us) to reserve your tickets at the Will Call table. Additionally, tickets will be available at the door for $5 for all students and $10 for adults. Both performances start at 7:00 p.m.
