Local NAACP Hosts Author Debby Irving

The Mystic Valley Area branch of the NAACP holds its monthly membership meetings on the fourth Monday of every month. Starting at 7:30 pm on November 24, 2014 this month’s meeting will be held at the historic West Medford Community Center at 111 Arlington Street, Medford, MA 02155.

The public is welcome and encouraged to join us for lively discussions on issues important to civil rights advocacy as well as hear from dynamic presenters.

This month’s guest presenter (and also branch member) is Debby Irving, the author of Waking Up White. In her book Ms. Irving chronicles a personal journal of discovering the overwhelming number of systems in our commonplace society designed and maintained to provide advantages to whites. Her powerful story provides a compelling argument that simply ignoring these known barriers to equal opportunity for all perpetuates racial tensions and acerbates racial relations in this country.
