McKillop Announces School Committee Bid

David McKillop

My name is David McKillop Jr. and I am seeking election to Medford School Committee.

I was born and raised in the amazing city of Medford. I am a proud graduate of the Medford High School Class of 2011, and I continued my education at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH. I am excited to return home and begin to serve the people, the families, and especially the students of Medford. Being removed from the Medford school system for only a mere four years, I have fresh memories of what it was like to be a student; to go through the college process, to take all the exams, and to figure out how to make friends. Coming back to Medford now as an adult will be a new adventure, one that will be geared towards giving back to the community that has given me so much. I have learned a great deal about life and helping others during my career at Saint Anselm College, skills that I hope to apply to the families of Medford.

During my career at Saint Anselm College, I have participated in three student lead service trips around the country and internationally; each trip provided a look into different types of education throughout the world. I went to Orland, ME where we helped in a homeless community where the students were mainly home-schooled while being homeless. In Costa Rica, I experienced how school is important to the children, but family was more important considering they had no parents to protect them. Finally, in New Orleans, we helped with a Catholic elementary school when all of the children were affected by Hurricane Katrina, but they surrounded themselves with God and family and learned to cope with the disaster.

During my career at St. Anselm College, along with my elaborate liberal arts education, I have learned how to be a leader. I was class president for three years before becoming Student Body President in my last year. The experience I had was amazing, and during my time serving the students there were many changes to the college that we had to deal with. During my time as Student Body President, the curriculum changed and the students were confused as to why it was changing and what it was becoming. I had to be that student to contact administration and faculty to work with them on the changes, and to help them figure out how to relay this information to the students. My time as a Saint Anselm College Hawk helped me grow into a confident person, but my time as a Medford High School Mustang made me a confident student.

What makes me proud to be a Mustang? If I were to answer this question, I’m afraid my comments would go on and on. What I can say to answer that question is that I am proud of the friends I have, the education I have, and the memories I have. I am happy to say that my experience as a Medford Public Schools student was nothing short of incredible. The education I received from my schooling in Medford fully prepared me for college, and in turn, fully prepared me for the public life. I have always felt comfortable talking to and meeting many of my fellow citizens of Medford because we are an honest, kind, and prideful city. I hope to better our school system and make it even more amazing than it already is. I hope I can have your support this election season. Let’s make Medford’s students and families proud of themselves, and proud of the City of Medford. Thank you.
