City Dedicates New DPW Yard in Honor of Alfred P. Pompeo

On Sunday Medford held a special dedication ceremony for its new Department of Public Works Facility, which was named in honor of former mayor, long-time public servant, and WWII veteran Alfred P. Pompeo. The new building replaces a facility that was constructed in 1937 and was partially condemned. The modern DPW yard blends the new and old; energy efficient features such as LED lighting and a rain harvesting system are part of a building that includes an original weather vane, city seal, and lettering.

The new DPW yard was built on the same land as the old one; it includes plenty of space for vehicle maintenance for Police, Fire, and DPW vehicles; salt storage; and a “command center” for planning during weather emergencies.

The facility was named in honor of former Mayor, City Councilor, and School Committee member Alfred P. Pompeo; his son Steve, pictured, delivered remarks on behalf of his large family.
