Girls JV Soccer Team Has Strong Start to Season

On Wednesday September 9th the Medford High girl’s junior varsity soccer team kicked off its season with a 5-1 victory over Malden. Medford jumped out to a 3-0 lead by halftime and added two more goals in the second half. The Mustangs received goals from Leanna Tassinari (2 goals), Carmen Diorio, Lydia Klein, and Francesca Viggiani.

The Lady Mustangs continued Greater Boston League play when they hosted Everett the following Wednesday. Once again the Mustang offense scored five goals in a 5-1 victory. Leanna Tassinari added her 3rd and 4th goals of the season along with Carmen Diorio, Arianna Jarvis, and Youventha Raymond scoring a goal apiece. The game was scoreless the first 27 minutes when the Mustangs scored five goals in the next 38 minutes.

On Saturday September 19th, the Mustangs wore their blue uniforms for the first time as they travelled to Martin Alumni Athletic Stadium in Lowell. Medford quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead six minutes into the match when freshman Carmen Diorio kicked in a rebound for her third goal of the season. Lowell was able to tie the game late in the first half and then added the game winning goal with five minutes remaining on a penalty kick.

The match up with Lowell is part of a scholastic soccer series held on Saturdays between the four Greater Boston League schools (Medford, Everett, Malden, & Somerville) and four Merrimack Valley Conference schools (Haverhill, Lawrence, Lowell, & Methuen).

Sophomore Francesca Viggiani and freshman Sophia Bendok have combined to allow only three goals in three games this season.

The junior varsity roster includes Ariana Jarvis (sophomore), Kayla Dell’Anno (freshman), Ryleigh McLaughlin (freshman), Allison Harvey (freshman), Carmen Diorio (freshman), Samantha Liu (sophomore), Leanna Tassinari (freshman), Exsandrine Jean Marie (sophomore), Sophia Pierre (junior), Lydia Klein (sophomore), Narda Alverez (sophomore), Ryan Heard (sophomore), Youventha Raymond (sophomore), Nevaeh Larkin (freshman), Ajani Martin-Abascal (sophomore), Sofia Bendok (freshman), and Francesca Viggiani (sophomore).
