‘Lotus Lives: A Chamber Opera’ at Tufts Feb. 21st

The Tufts University Department of Music presents Lotus Lives: A Chamber Opera, by Su Lian Tan, in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 8 p.m. Scored for two singers and brass ensemble, Lotus Lives brings together fascinating chronologies of three generations of women: Lily’s life in 1980s London and the present, her grandmother’s in 1920s China, and her mother’s in Malaysia. The work is a shifting panorama of singers, dancers, instrumentalists, and shadow puppetry, both live and prerecorded, and the music blends contemporary styles with rap, Chinese folk music, and dance-club music into an exuberant romp accompanied by a dazzling display of electronics. This concert is made possible through a generous Opera America grant by the Toulmin foundation.

The Granoff Music Center is located at 20 Talbot Avenue on Tufts’ Medford/Somerville campus. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit
