Lady Mustang Hockey Team Tops Peabody

On Wednesday, February 10th the Medford High girls varsity hockey team edged Peabody 1-0.

The goaltending was the story for both teams as the neither teams offenses could get a shot past Medford’s junior Trisha MacLean or Peabody’s freshman Dana Smullen during the first two periods.

Medford’s junior forward Ailish Fallon was able to break the scoreless tie with ten minutes remaining in the game as she took the puck from the defensive zone to the offensive zone and let a wrist shot go from the blue line that went top left corner on Smullen. For Fallon it was her team leading ninth goal of the season.
The final ten minutes saw Peabody came close to tying the game but the Mustang defense helped MacLean preserve the shutout. Peabody had two great opportunities to tie the game late in the third period including a loose puck rebound that Mustang senior defense Ashley Morris was able to clear out from in of the crease. The final 90 seconds of the game the Mustang penalty kill unit of Brenna Forbes, Christina Gesualdi, Julia Shanahan, and Abby Vigliotte were able to kill off a Tanner 6 on 4 power play as time expired.

The Lady Mustangs wrap up the season when they host Melrose on Monday and Watertown on Wednesday. Both games start at noon at LoConte rink. Medford will honor its senior players at Monday’s game.
