Medford’s ‘Tree of the Week’: Ginkgo

gingkoGinkgo, also called Maidenhair Tree (“Ginkgo biloba”)

Ginkgo is one of the oldest trees on Earth, dating back 150 million years or more, placing it in the age of the early dinosaurs.

Leaves of the ginkgo are fan-shaped, bright green in summer and turning a brilliant yellow-gold in fall. Ginkgo is usually upright/pyramidal in shape when young, with picturesque branching. It grows 50’ to 80’ in height, making it a good candidate for larger spaces and public areas.

The three ginkgos in the photo are located at the Brooks School, by the playground along Allston St.
