MHS Alumni Association Awards Announced

Recipients to be Recognized at Annual Medford Night Nov. 25th

The Medford High School Alumni Association (MHSAA) has announced the 2016 recipients of the annual MHSAA awards.

The “Mustangs Give Back” Award is presented to an alum of Medford High School that has given back to Medford High as a teacher, staff member, administrator, coach, parent, or community supporter. Former Medford High School teacher John McAdam (’71) has been selected as the 2016 recipient of the “Mustangs Give Back” Award. McAdam worked as a teacher in the Business and Social Studies Departments at Medford High for over three decades. Over the years McAdam has gone above and beyond to serve the students of Medford High School. His service includes regularly volunteering to sell tickets at sporting events, teaching in the Medford High Auto School Program, serving as Interim Athletic Director during a prior vacancy, and advising the former MHS Bank. Even in retirement, McAdam can be seen at Mustang sporting events and teaching in the MHS Auto School Program. His length and depth of service to Medford High makes him clearly deserving as this year’s “Mustangs Give Back” Award.

The “Honorary Mustang” Award is presented to a member of the Medford High School Community that did not graduate from Medford High School, but exhibits and embodies the level of Mustang Pride to earn the distinction of being an Honorary Mustang. This year’s recipient, former Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn, has clearly exhibited Mustang Pride as a homegrown Mustang. During McGlynn’s 28-year career as Mayor, he constantly pushed for the best resources and opportunities for the students of Medford High School. His many years of overwhelming support to generations of Medford High School students make him worthy to be this year’s “Honorary Mustang.”

The “Young Alumni” Award is an award designed to honor Mustangs that have graduated from Medford High within the past fifteen years and have quickly gone on to respected successes and/or have provided noteworthy service to the Medford High School Community. With an extensive array of nominations, the MHSAA Board of Directors has decided to select two recipients for this award–Nick Tucci (’01) and Chris Murphy (’04). The first recipient, Nick Tucci, currently serves in the role of Assistant Principal at Medford High, a position where he has excelled since taking on in 2014. Prior to being an Assistant Principal, Tucci worked as a teacher at Medford High for several years where he taught Advanced Placement/Honors courses and served as a dedicated club advisor. Chris Murphy, our other Young Alumni Award recipient, demonstrates strong commitment to Medford through strong community involvement. Murphy’s involvement in the Medford community includes running as a previous Medford School Committee candidate, serving as on the Medford Football Booster Club Board of Directors (where he currently serves as President), and sitting on the Medford Park Commission.

The “Local Business Honor Roll” is the final award to honor the local businesses in the Medford community that consistently support Medford High School’s students and the Medford High community. John Brewers Tavern has been selected as the 2016 recipient of this award. Owners Bill and Sue Honeycutt (both MHS alums) served as leaders of service in the local business community. John Brewers often sponsors events supporting Mustang sports teams and annually hosts the annual Medford Night with Tom Convery and the MHSAA . Bill and Sue’s generosity to the community does not go unnoticed and their service to Medford High is appreciated by many.

Recipients will be honored at Medford Night 5 with Tom Convery and the Medford High School Alumni Association on Friday, November 25, 2016 at John Brewers Tavern on 7 Highland Avenue in Malden, MA. The MHSAA will be presenting the awards at 8:00 pm. This event is free and open to all members of the public. It will be a night of fun entertainment and socialization for Medford High alumni from all years. Tom Convery (’71) and the Medford High School Alumni Association invite alumni to come to honor this year’s award recipients. Four of the five recipients will be recognized at this event. Nick Tucci will be recognized at the Medford High School pep-rally on Wednesday, November 23 surrounded by his colleagues and students.
