Little League Tourney Under Way at Columbus Park
|Wakefield Beats Melrose in 1st Game, Extra Innings

The Medford Invitational Tournament opened on a scorching Saturday at Columbus Park. The first of many games among ten different Little League all-star teams went into extra innings, with Wakefield pulling out a win over Melrose.
Tonight’s games have been postponed due to weather. The games have been pushed to Friday, August 10. Medford takes on Somerville at 6PM and North Cambridge faces Billerica at 8PM.
The tournament, in its twelfth year, is headed by Medford resident Ron Giovino.Â

In other sports news…
The Andre Chiefs fell to the Wakefield Merchants in each of two games this weekend, one at home and one away. Sunday’s game was close- each team had eleven hits but the Merchants eked out a 5-4 win. The Chiefs’ Dave Marsters tossed 5 K’s in Sunday’s game. The Chiefs take on the Watertown Reds today and tomorrow at Watertown’s Victory Field.
The Medford Americans didn’t fare any better, falling to the Lexington Blue Sox on Friday night at Playstead Park and the Watertown Reds last night in Watertown. They take on Gately Athletics tonight at 6PM at Playstead Park.
