Medford Remembers its POW/MIA’s
|Veterans Fred Solberg and Tom Convery stand before Medford’s WWII Memorial. Solberg, with his old hat and jacket on, had one more mission to go when he was shot down and became a prisoner of war for two years. Convery enlisted in the Army Air Corps, was transferred to Airborne training, and when injured was sent to Europe as an Infantry replacement in the 106th Infantry Division.

Today, the third Friday of September, is national POW/MIA Day. Two Medford veterans spent time as prisoners-of-war, Fred Solberg (pictured above), and School Committee member Fred Pompeo.Â
Pompeo was injured during the Battle of the Bulge and was shot down by his own aircraft.
Solberg, shot down on his second-to-last mission, survived a crash-landing in Sicily and spent two years as a POW in German and Italian camps.
Catch their stories, and those of more than seventy other WWII vets, every week on Channel 15 as part of an oral history project organized by veteran Tom Convery and the Medford Historical Society. New interviews air each Friday and air everyday at noon, 4PM, and 8PM.

I am afraid that Fred (my father) passed away on March 10, 2010. He really was a hero, and he is sorely missed.
