Nearly four out of five voters stayed home for yesterday’s election. According to the Registrar of Voters, 21% of Medford’s 32,914 registered voters headed to the polls.
Turnout was lower than in the past two elections in 2003 and 2005, where turnout hovered between 26 and 30%.
Nearly 10,000 voters headed to the polls in 2005, while 6,985 cast ballots in 2007. Medford has gained only about 500 new voters since 2005.
Just about 28% of the ballots cast for mayor were write-in’s or blank. For the City Council, 36% of the ballots were write-in’s or blank, compared to 35% for the School Committee.
