Top Mustang runner Philip Galebach pulled out an impressive performance at Saturday’s MIAA Eastern Massachusetts Division 1 Cross-Country race, earning third place with a 15:55 mark for the 3.1 mile course.
Galebach finished only 16 seconds behind the first-place runner and ran the third-fastest time of the day, beating out hundreds of other runners that competed in three other divisional races.
The junior easily qualified for next weekend’s all-state meet, where he is expected to be one of the runners to beat.
As for the rest of the team, the boys placed 17 out of 35 teams that competed in the Division 1 race, just nudging out league opponent Somerville, which finished 18th and was the only team that beat Medford during the regular season.
The girls’ team did not fare as well. None of the girls qualified for the all-state meet and the team placed a disappointing 22 out of 23 teams.

Medford’s varsity cheering team is heading to the state championships after winning the North Regional Competition at Woburn on Sunday.
The win caps off a successful fall season for the girls, who are the reigning Greater Boston League champs since 2004.
The girls, who last won a state title in 1998 and captured two national titles in 2002 and 2004, will compete at Shrewsbury High School on Sunday, November 18.
According to Program Director Lisa Envangelista, the girls are seeking their first-ever fall state title. The state title earned in 1998 was for the winter season in Division 1.
Now, due to smaller enrollment in Medford, the girls cheer in a very competitive Division 2, and will have their work cut out for them as they head into Sunday’s competition.
