Seven Arlington residents are vying for an open house seat vacated by Jim Marzilli that covers much of Arlington and West Medford.
As of yesterday’s 5PM deadline, the following candidates have officially thrown their hats into the ring: Arlington School Committee members Jeff Thielman, Sean Garballey, and Susan Lovelace, former Arlington Town Moderator John Worden, Robert Valeri, Suzanne Gordon, and Andrew O’Brien.
The candidates have little more than one month before facing off in a primary election on February 5, 2008, the same day as the Massachusetts presidential primary. According to YourArlington.com, five of the candidates- Thielman, Garballey, Lovelace, Gordon, and O’Brien- are Democrats, so only the candidate with the most votes in the Democratic primary will advance to the general election on March 4, 2008.
Worden is running as a Republican and Valeri as an Independent, so by default both will be in the general election because they face no competition in the primary.
Both Garballey and Lovelaces’ School Committee terms are up in April 2008. They have not yet said whether they would finish out their terms if elected to the seat. Thielman, whose term expires in April 2009, said he would finish out his term if elected.
