Two Medford High School graduates that furthered their education at UMass-Lowell are trying to help other MHS alums follow in their footsteps.

Jake Burke and David Stordy, friends since high school, started a scholarship fund last spring with a $30,000 donation and a matching endowment incentive grant from the state, according to a story on the UMass-Lowell website. Since then the pair has been trying to raise another $70,000 and are planning a fundraiser Friday night, January 18, at the UMass-Lowell Alumni Hockey Night.

“We both came from working class families and we were of the first generation in our families to go to college. We both attended UML on scholarships, too. We didn’t want a Medford student to say, ‘I wish I could have gone to college but I didn’t have the money,’” Burke told UMass-Lowell.

The event kicks off at 7PM at Lowell’s Tsongas Arena, with UML taking to the ice against Boston College. For more information about the scholarship fund or fundraiser, contact Jake Burke at jakeburke1@gmail.com or David Stordy at dstordy@comcast.net.
